  4.     Father Bruce Ritter, founder of Covenant House, the
  5. nation's most successful program for runaway teenagers, hoped
  6. that by resigning he would end the controversy that has engulfed
  7. the organization since four young men accused him of sexual
  8. misconduct. Instead, the turmoil mounted. The state attorney
  9. general has widened an investigation to include personal loans
  10. that Ritter and other Covenant House officials obtained from the
  11. organization, possibly in violation of state law.

  13.     To make matters worse, Frank Macchiarola, who became
  14. Covenant House's acting president after Ritter was suspended by
  15. his religious order while it investigated the allegations of
  16. sexual misconduct, also quit. One explanation for his departure
  17. was that Ritter urged the board of directors to seek a nun or
  18. priest as his permanent replacement and appoint his longtime
  19. deputy James Harnett, a layman, as interim head. With the
  20. group's credibility compromised, the loan revelations may
  21. endanger its fund-raising ability -- and its ministry to the
  22. young.
